"Clean, Green Boating Scholarship" Essay Contest
Citizens for a Healthy Bay and the Tacoma Liveaboard Association announce the 2010 "Clean, Green Boating Scholarship" Essay Contest. The contest is open to all high school students in Fife, Franklin Pierce, Peninsula, Puyallup, Tacoma, and University Place Public, Private, and Home School Districts.
Students are invited to write and submit original essays of 1,500 words or less on the topic of "A Healthy Puget Sound: What's the Problem, and How Do We Change It?" Each student essay submitted shall represent a high school class, club or team from a Fife, Franklin Pierce, Peninsula, Puyallup, Tacoma, or University Place Public, Private, or Home School District in the scholarship contest. The scholarship is intended to help a student group of up to 29 youths experience an "on-the-water" marine science expedition in Puget Sound. Each student essay entered into the contest gives that student's school group the opportunity to win the scholarship. Essays must be submitted by April 30, 2010.
3-day, 2-night Marine Science Expedition
The school group represented by the winning essay will be awarded the "Clean, Green Boating Scholarship" toward a 3-day, 2-night marine science expedition with Salish Sea Expeditions www.salish.org, a non-profit organization that conducts innovative "science-under-sail" programs for student groups on board the 61' sailing research vessel Carlyn, an ideal platform for the learning expeditions of a lifetime. All expeditions occur during the school calendar year on the waters of the Puget Sound.
Building Environmental Leadership
The purpose of the "Clean, Green Boating Scholarship" is to:
- advance "clean water" stewardship and environmental education for Tacoma area youth;
- deepen respect for Puget Sound's delicate marine ecosystem;
- raise awareness about the urgent need to protect and preserve our waterways;
- inspire leadership in addressing these issues.
The winning essay will enable a local student group to participate in on-the-water marine science and boating skills programs that extend learning beyond the classroom and take advantage of the vast teaching platform offered by Commencement Bay, Thea Foss Waterway and Puget Sound.
Scholarship Partners
The Tacoma Liveaboard Association and Citizens for a Healthy Bay have partnered with Salish Sea Expeditions to create the new scholarship. A review panel comprised of members of the Tacoma Liveaboard Association and Citizens for a Healthy Bay will select the winning essay and high school group. Winners will be notified by May 15, 2010. The winner of the essay contest will be honored and the scholarship will be awarded at the 2nd Annual "Clean, Green Boating Festival" on May 22, 2010.
Scholarship Funding
A portion of all registration fees, sponsorships, and direct contributions from supporters for the 2nd Annual "Clean, Green Boating Festival" will go toward funding the "Clean, Green Boating Scholarship." The actual value of the scholarship will be determined by the amount of scholarship funds committed in advance of the Festival. The scholarship is intended to be applied toward the $7,500 cost of the 3-day, 2-night expedition. The school group awarded the scholarship shall contract directly with Salish Sea Expeditions and shall be responsible for any additional funding required for the expedition. The scholarship amount and the winner of the essay contest will be announced at the 2nd Annual "Clean, Green Boating Festival".
Contest Entry Instructions
Each student's essay representing a Tacoma area high school must be accompanied by a "Clean, Green Boating Scholarship" Teacher/Administrator Agreement signed by the person who will serve as the contact person/expedition coordinator if that school is awarded a scholarship.
