Tacoma Liveaboards partnered with Citizens for a Healthy Bay and Delin Docks Marina to host the 1st Annual "Clean, Green Boating Fair" on Thea Foss Waterway. Washington State Department of Ecology called the event the "first of its kind," highlighting the role recreational boaters play in protecting and preserving Puget Sound's waterways.

"Marina Fires" Presentation - 1st for Tacoma Fire Department

In the fall of 2009 the Tacoma Liveaboard Association asked the City of Tacoma Fire Department to deliver a special presentation on "Marina Fires: Prevention and What to Do if You're in One!". The Tacoma Fire Department representatives were ready and willing to do so, but no existing presentation addressed this topic for public education.

Lt. Joe Stiles of the City of Tacoma Fire Department, Emergency Management Fire/Life Safety Education Division, responded and developed the first "Marina Fires" presentation specifically for the October 24, 2009 Tacoma Liveaboards' free public event at Foss Waterway Seaport. This presentation is now available to help empower more boaters and save lives and property in the event of a boat and/or marina fire.

"Marina Fires" Outcomes

Lt. Stiles of the City of Tacoma Fire Department described how to avoid boat fires and how to respond if a fire occurs on board. Mike Miller of SmartPlug Systems joined Lt. Stiles at the "Marina Fires" event and presented examples of how current shore power systems and plugs often fail. He then demonstrated SmartPlug System's new solution that dramatically improves the safety of shore power connections. For more information, visit www.smartplug.com.

John Strong of ACE Recreational Marine Insurance added crucial information on fire prevention, what safety issues to be aware of, and what steps to take following any type of fire on your vessel. For more information, visit www.acemarineinsurance.com.

During the "Marina Fires" event, the City of Tacoma's Fireboat arrived at Foss Waterway Seaport's dock, providing the opportunity for "walk around tours" on board the emergency response vessel.

The Tacoma Liveaboards are proud to have participated in bringing this public presentation of crucial safety information into being. Thank you, Lt. Stiles, the City of Tacoma Fire Department, SmartPlug Systems, and ACE Recreational Marine Insurance for your responsiveness!
